Clapperboard Youth Project

Clapperboard Team

Clapperboard UK is a radical youth led film and media project challenging oppression and prejudice and enabling deprived and excluded young people and their communties to tell stories and make new media.

The Clapperboard Youth Project is a short filmmaking project delivered by Clapperboard UK, which is a non-profit making organisation. Now in its fifth year, our aim is to bring creativity into education and communities across the North West, through exciting educational film-making and media initiatives with young people between the ages of 11-19. To date, over one thousand young people have participated.

We’ve also delivered a number of educational workshops to young people on series issues such as knife crime and antisocial behaviour in partnership with Merseyside Police, who commissioned us to produce a short training film in collaboration with young people from Liverpool.

Clapperboard Youth Project 2009-10 has produced nine short films with young people from Liverpool, Knowsley, Merseyside, Salford and Oldham respectively with partners including a.o. Government Office North West, Salford City Council & MediaCity.

Professional theatre, film and television writers: James McMartin, Chris Green and Punam Ramchurn, Colette Kane, Paul Womack, Alan Field, Arthur Ellison supported each group of young people to develop their ideas and assisted with script development, exploring the issues around sexuality and gender, substance misuse, hate crime, knife crime and anti-social behaviour. Their stories are honest, real and controversial and will hopefully create much needed debate between all who are concerned.

Production Company Bakermedia has headed the creative input in Greater Manchester, with creative input from Handstand Productions on the Merseyside team, teaching the young filmmakers the production process.

The nine short films have been independently judged by high profile industry professionals Frank Cottrell Boyce, Paul Abbott and actors John Henshaw and Christine Tremarco as well as Corrin and Bradley, two of Clapperboard’s Active Citizens Panel.

Clapperboard Active Citizenship Panel, a group of young representatives from the North West has had ‘hands-on’ involvement in all aspects of the project and will have a say in future Clapperboard projects including forthcoming films on the issues of Hate Crime and other issues yet to be decided.
